# Which emission factors are used for each reporting section?

Emission factors are standard values used to estimate the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with a specific activity, product, or process. They serve as essential tools in carbon accounting by linking actions—such as driving a vehicle or using electricity—to their climate impact, enabling organizations to calculate and track their emissions accurately.

At Compera, we use a combination of open-source and licensed databases to provide reliable and up-to-date emission factors for different emission scopes:

- **Scope 1**: We use emission factors from the UK’s *Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DEFRA)*. These are regularly updated yearly.
- **Scope 2**: For electricity-related emissions, we apply different sources depending on the reporting method: 
    - *Location-based*: In 2024, data was sourced from the *International Energy Agency (IEA)*. From 2025 onward, data is sourced from *EMBER*.
    - *Market-based*: We refer to the *Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB)* database.
- **District heating**: Emission factors are sourced from *Norsk Fjernvarme*.
